Chapter Fourteen

I sat upright as something else occurred to me. “Today is the midsummer fete! Oh, Dilys, you should be there…”

“Elsie has gone to do the stall. I couldn’t.”

“You stayed for me?” I was touched.

She pursed her lips. “Well, yes, because you were sleeping all day, there was stuff to do around the house, so I had to do it. Otherwise we’d have no clean socks.”

“Aunt Dilys!” Maddie said reproachfully but I didn’t mind my aunt’s carping. Then Maddie looked sad. “I should be there too. I ought to go … Sian will think I’ve let her down.”

“Elsie will have spoken to her,” Dilys said. “Go later if you want, but there is no pressure. You’ve both done all right.”

This was dizzyingly high praise, and I thought it was the right time to say, “Ah, oh, aunt? You know that collection of shiny costume jewellery you have?”

“Mmm…”

“The thing is, I got some help from a gnome, and you know what they’re like with shiny things.”

“You’ve promised him something, haven’t you?” She sighed. “Well, then. Have a look in the box on my dressing table but don’t open the second drawer down, unless you’re wearing thick gloves. Oh and some parents came around to see you,” Dilys went on. “I told them you were busy but you’d call to see them.”

“Who?”

“Lacey’s mum and dad. And they didn’t seem very happy with you.”

Maddie looked at me with concern as I got to my feet. “I ought to go and see them,” I said. “This is well overdue now.” Then I felt dizzy and sat back down. “I’ll go round after tea tonight.”
